The previous month, she scotched rumours that she was leaving, but in May , Julie confirmed she was leaving the show. Julie stated in an interview that after 25 years playing Bet, she wanted some " Julie time now ".

So the producers planned the character's exit from the show. Shortly afterwards, she filmed her final scenes as Bet, to be aired in mid October. As part of Bet Gilroy's exit, Bet wanted to buy the pub off the brewery when it announced it was selling some of its pubs. Bet asked her best friend Rita for a helping hand in raising the cash.

Bet had not made any profit during her 10 years as licensee. Rita and Bet's friend Alf Roberts advised Rita not to go through with it due to Bet not making any profit, and also the partnership could end a good friendship if they fall out. Rita told Bet she would not go through with the offer.

Bet called off her friendship with Rita and became depressed due to this so handed the tenancy back to the brewery and left in a taxi in October for a fresh start. In , several months after leaving Coronation Street, Julie signed a deal for adverts for Shredded Wheat.

She then filmed a pilot for The Julie Goodyear Show. Most famous as Bet Lynch, barmaid landlady of Coronation Street , her stepfather was a publican, and she served behind his bar, The Bay House in Haywood, to raise money for her modelling career dream. After her first failed marriage modelling career took off and led to various bit parts and six-week appearance in Coronation Street as Bet Lynch.

During this time she was advised by Patricia Phoenix to get some formal acting training, and so she joined The Oldham Repertory Company.

This also lead to a lifelong friendship with Phoenix, which ended only with the latter's death. Following a variety of straight and comic parts on stage and TV she rejoined Coronation Street in a regular role.
