For patients who typically prefer side-sleeping, this position may be possible with proper support, though back-sleeping is generally encouraged. If you usually sleep on your stomach, the thought of back-sleeping for several weeks can seem daunting, but try not to worry; the majority of patients agree that back-sleeping after breast lift surgery comes fairly naturally.
If you are worried about accidentally shifting during the night, try placing rolled-up towels or additional pillows around your sides for added support and reassurance. In most cases, patients continue sleeping on their back for at least 2 — 4 weeks after breast lift surgery to minimize discomfort. Some patients are able to resume side-sleeping comfortably after 1 — 2 weeks, though stomach-sleeping may remain uncomfortable or painful for much longer.
During your follow-up appointments, Dr. Rao will evaluate your healing progress and make recommendations about when you can safely resume your preferred sleeping position. It is critical that patients wear their supportive unwired medical bra at all times for the first 1 — 2 weeks after breast lift surgery.
At this point, you may be able to sleep without a bra, though most patients find it more comfortable to continue wearing an unwired bra around the clock for several more weeks. MYA recommend that you sleep on your back at a degree angle and slightly propped upright following a breast enlargement or any other cosmetic surgery procedure for a minimum of 2 weeks. This position will help to reduce any post-operative swelling, pressure or discomfort and encourages breast symmetry.
Sleeping propped upright following your surgery also helps to prevent you from rolling on to your side in the night and resting on your new nose or breasts.
Patients should sleep propped upright for a minimum of 2 weeks following their cosmetic surgery procedure. We recommend practicing sleeping in this position prior to your surgery, to help you identify what you might need to help you sleep soundly on your back post-op. We suggest ordering a V-pillow, using a small pillow to pop under your lower back for support, and using extra pillows to stop you rolling on to your side in the night.
